Imagine asking your neighbors if their refrigerator feels lonely when they go on vacation. You might get a few odd looks, maybe a worried phone call to your relatives. For a long time, that’s how people viewed the emotional lives of computers—if they even considered it at all. But as artificial intelligence grows more complex, the idea that AI might, one day, suffer is no longer the stuff of science fiction or philosophers with too much time on their hands. In fact, it’s quickly creeping into serious discussions about ethics, technology, and our own sense of what it means to feel.
Are we being a little too empathetic toward our algorithms, or are we on the cusp of a moral revolution?
